Obesity – Michigan (.gov)

Michigan is consistently ranked among the top 10 to 15 most obese states in the United States. Three out of every 10 adults in Michigan (35.2 percent) are obese, while 34.6 percent are overweight (BRFSS 2020).

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) aims to prevent and control obesity and other chronic diseases by promoting healthful eating and physical activity, and supporting policies and environmental strategies that support healthy behaviors.

The Michigan Health & Wellness 4 x 4 Plan encourages Michiganders to adopt a healthy lifestyle, offering a simple 4 x 4 Tool and other resources. The Tool encourages people to partner with their healthcare providers and enact four healthy behaviors and track four personal health measures.

4 Key Healthy Behaviors 4 Key Health Measures
  • Maintain a healthy diet
  • Engage in regular exercise
  • Get an annual physical examination
  • Avoid ALL tobacco use
  • Body mass index (BMI)

The Michigan Health & Wellness website has useful resources you can share with patients:

  • The interactive web tools on this page can help patients create a personalized plan for better health.
  • The SuperTracker allows patients to track physical activity, daily food intake, weight, and up to five personal goals.
  • ChooseMyPlate provides nutritional tips for a healthy diet, as well as online tools and recipes.

MI Healthier Tomorrow encourages Michiganders to pledge to live a healthier lifestyle. After taking the online pledge, residents receive a free Getting Started Kit in the mail and can join in on the conversation on Facebook to help guide them on their weight loss journey.

Participants can also sign up for healthy texts and/or emails with motivational messages, reminders, tips, and recipes to help keep them focused on reaching their goal of losing weight and becoming healthier.

  • Become a MI Healthier Tomorrow Partner by promoting the pledge to live a healthier lifestyle. Download the pledge, website buttons, social media samples, and sample messages.
  • Online tools help you assess your practice, and then plan, implement and evaluate your worksite wellness efforts.

Having a breastfeeding-friendly practice is one way to encourage new mothers to have a healthy lifestyle for themselves and their infants.

Did you know? Breastfeeding also promotes healthy weight! Breast milk provides babies with easy-to-digest nutrition, ideal for their needs. Breastfeeding also helps mothers return to pre-pregnancy weight more quickly and easily.

In Michigan, women have the right to breastfeed in any place that is open to the public. According to the Michigan Breastfeeding Anti-Discrimination Act (Act 197 of 2014), women are not to be denied access to goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations while breastfeeding.
