What stimulates you? Have you ever sat back and thought about all the various ways our days, hours and minutes are stimulated by everything happening around us at any given moment? Our bodies react to stimulation, both good and bad, some healthy and some sad. Think about all the things that stimulate us in this world, sunshine, caffeine, sugar, exercise, emotions, sports games, temperatures, medical procedures, acupuncture, massage, cell phones, etc. The list goes on and on.
Stimulation is real and it can be a concerning issue within our healthy and/or unhealthy lifestyles. For instance, sunshine stimulates our bodies to produce vitamin D which our cells need to stay healthy. Caffeine, sugars and other stimulating foods can stimulate brain and body cells into being more alert or possibly, drowsier. Exercise stimulates endorphins that improve many aspects of health. Acupuncture, massage and other body work stimulates, revives and/or releases energy paths, healing opportunities, stress and other very important physical issues. You know how emotions can get you going or pull you down and emotions are initiated from your thoughts and feelings. Thoughts and feelings are stimulated by events happening all around you. Full circle.
If stimulation is discussed in the terms of electrical impulses traveling through your body, think of what already happens in the medical world. Physical Therapy Clinics use ultrasound, iontophoresis, TENS, dry needling and electrodes every day in order to stimulate healing and reduce pain. These are units that send or create stimulation with either pulses, heat, poking or medications into our bodies. These physical therapy modalities do exactly that, they stimulate the cells into healing themselves by encouraging repair at a cellular level.
Have you ever had your body fat tested on one of those machines that you either hold or stand on? How do you think that is accomplished? The machine sends an electrical measurement signal through your body in order to figure out body composition (muscle, water, fat) while holding or standing on the unit. When complete the machine returns a number representing your body composition. Are these machines accurate? Depends, there are so many variables that can throw off true measurements and then compared to what? However just like a scale, if it’s used sensibly and regularly, they can help you stay on track with regards to weight gain/loss and healthy body composition.
There is even more, think about what happens in our hospitals and the things that are used to save lives and fix broken body parts. We have defibrillators used to shock the heart muscle back into working order. X-rays are used to photograph and to visually look inside our bodies. Laser technology is used to slice, dice, remove and fix things with their highly concentrated energy powers. There’s radiation. Chemicals.
Why am I mentioning all of these things? Because human bodies are exposed to various stimulations all the time. Research is constantly working on trying to find out the benefits and problems associated with all these things traveling through our bodies. It’s impossible to know what exactly is going to cause a cellular mutation that might lead to cancer or what might stimulate a protein strand to repair itself and be healthy again.
The point is, our bodies are always being stimulated whether intentionally by our personal behaviors and habits or simply by living in our world today. Is there worry about what can happen to your body and health in such a stimulated world? There sure can be! Is there a way to avoid the bad things? Some things can be avoided, others would require crawling into a hole and wearing a tin-foil hat. Not realistic or even possible.
I do know this. We can and should prepare our human selves the best that we can by stimulating it with healthy things. Making yourself healthier and stronger provides more protection against the bad stimulations of the world. Exercise and proper nutrition stimulate from the cellular level on out. That way you are more protected from the outside in. Also, be mindful of what stimulations might be taking you away from a safer, stronger, happier life. Distracting cellphones might be our most dangerous stimulation in our world today!
